DeLorme Earthmate GPS LT-40 2010

I am entirely unhappy with this product.
I bought it mainly for the GPS, and since I couldn’t find it separate from the software, I bought the bundle.
Well, the software turns out to be hard to use, and the GPS is a disaster for a laptop user wishing to use it with any other software.
Delorme advertises it as NMEA compatible, implying you’ll be able to use it with other navigation or GPS products; however, the driver you need to do this, which is not included on the disk, is buggy, frequently crashes, and quits working if you shut the laptop lid and put it into sleep mode. this is evidently a known issue with the driver, complained about by Delorme users for years, and apparently is not going to be fixed.
In short, dispite Delorme’s claims, it cannot be used effectively on a laptop with any other software.
Also, because you need a driver to make it NMEA compatible, you won’t be able to use it on anything except a pc running desktop Windows.
I also found the cold-start times quoted, when in poor conditions, unreasonably optimistic.

The GPS works great. I’m having some software issues though. I think it may be as much the fault of Windows as it is DeLorme. The program will shut down for no apparent reason. And it sometimes changes views on it’s own. For instance if I’m running the program im my house it will go to some other part of the country without me doing anything and when I’m driving it will sometimes zoom out but at least it does stay with me so when I zoom back in it still shows me being where I really am. I haven’t contacted DeLorme about it yet.

The Delorme Earthmate LT-40 works great with my Gateway EC18 with 11.6″ screen. Logs on to satellite connections very fast. Speaks directions, large map views with 2D and 3D options. Used in town for a short trip and worked well. Can change route quickly by clicking on map and “choosing via” and will reroute using new choice. A bit of a learning curve to understand all the options. Program learns to understand your voice by reading words into microphone of computer. Recommend for those who would like to use their netbook to do extra duty. This GPS device plugs into the USB port. Delorme also makes a BT20 that has both Bluetooth and USB connections.

The GPS works very well, just make sure you have a clear view skyward. Interface with the software is decent also. Biggest problem is maps seem to be 2 – 3 years out of date.

I am using the software on a netbook computer with it’s own GPS so I cannot comment on the included GPS hardware. The software is not easy to use for simple here to an address. It must be for more formal vacation or route planning. For some reason it thinks I am in Salt Lake City, even though I’ve used it numerous times in Texas. So, typing an address causes the system to find similar streets in Utah. The fields in which to enter destimations are very small. Also, in rural areas where I work, roads evidently do not come together at intersections because the system often refers to ‘unnamed road’. Once you turn or go through that area, it does have the road number. The command of “turn on unnamed road” is not helpful.
