Is there a free download of an anti virus/anti spyware online?
I just got my new laptop and want to be protected against stupid viruses and spyware. Was just wondering if anyone knew of what all i need to be protected. I just wiped everything off the computer so 1 or 2 downloads to protect everything would be great. But the big question is…..is there a way to download what i need online for free? someone please helpppp before i get a nasty virus!!! Thanks in advance!
AVG Free for Viruses, Rootkits and Worms
AVG offers system scan, site prescanning (works best with Firefox), and active download scanning.
Malwarebytes for Malware including hijackers and spyware.
Try running scans with the following programs. They are all free and can be downloaded from download.com. Not only will they remove current infections, but they will also protect from here on out.
1) Malwarebytes Anti-Malware
2) SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition
3) Avira AntiVir Personal
4) ThreatFire
If you are unable to do so, run a scan on this site first and then install the programs: http://www.eset.com/onlinescan/
For your Anti-Virus……I would suggest Avast. Avast now includes anti-virus, some anti-spyware capability and anti-rootkit components. And all for the low low price of free. You can get it here:
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
2. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs…
SUPERAntiSpyware:
http://www.superantispyware.com/
They have a free version.
You need both Anti-Virus and Anti-Spy/Malware (AV/AS) solutions for complete coverage. Plus, web site validation products and software patch updaters is the final touch.
AV Independent Testing Feb 2009 Highest Rated: Kaspersky, Nod32, Norton, McAfee
AV Rated Above Average: Avira, Avast, BitDefender, F-Secure, eScan
AV Rated Average: AVG, Sophos, OneCare

As to the FREE products, Avira’s Antivir has a detection rate of over 99%, includes “root-kit” protection, and uses less system resources. Avast detection rate is around 97.8% and includes “root-kit” protection. Avast Anti-Virus is good if people suggest that, Avira is just slightly better. AVG’s detection rate is less than 85% for Script Malware and General Malware, and does NOT include “root-kit” protection in the FREE version…plus, slower scan speeds and a higher number of “false positives”.
A good FREE AV/AS mix could be Avira or Avast, with Malwarebytes and AdAware. Or, a good BUY/FREE AV/AS mix could be Kaspersky or Nod32, with Malwarebytes and AdAware.
I’m also considering the new VIPRE as a possible BUY next time based on early reports.

Stay away from AVG free. It’s sorry. Go here and see for yourself.

Don’t listen to the AVG pushers. There either virus writers, Hackers, Crackers, or noobs that just don’t know any better..
If you have to do free do Avira. But the best is paid. That’s Kaspersky.
All free AV’s have security holes in them. There is no such thing as a free ride.
Avira test.

Actually some antivirus or antispyware themselves plant virus or spyware on your computer and then ask you to purchase their software to remove them. You have to be really careful on what antivirus you use.
