How do I find out what a Smith & Wesson 38 Special CTG pistol serial # 123272 is worth and what yr it was made
It has a 4″ barrel and I am sure it is quite old as the Smith & Wesson trade mark emblem on the right side of the gun is nearly worn off. It belonged to an ex police officer volunteer in the Sacramento, Ca area.
When I am in question, I go check out gunbroker.com and see if anyone else has one up for sale. Demand drives cost, so if it’s rare and costing a bundle on gunbroker, that’s where I start…
Have to see a picture, or know the model in question.
To find out what year it was made and any history on the revolver, you can request a search directly from Smith and Wesson. They don’t charge for telling you the year it was made, but to do a weapon history search will cost you $30:

You can also pay to get the revolver appraised at places like this:

They’ll give you a ballpark figure of what the gun is worth.
